The Empire Strikes Back

1980 – Hardangerjøkulen glacier

Imperial AT-AT walkers firing lasers across the snowy battlefield on Hoth.

The Empire Strikes Back

As the Galactic Empire tightens its grip on the Rebel Alliance, Luke Skywalker begins his Jedi training while his friends face perilous escape and deadly pursuit across the galaxy. The iconic second film in the Star Wars saga deepens the conflict and expands the universe’s emotional and visual scope.

Norway played a critical role in bringing one of the franchise’s most memorable worlds to life. The icy battle scenes on the ice planet Hoth were filmed on location at Finse, near the Hardangerjøkulen Glacier in Western Norway, where the stark, snow-covered terrain convincingly depicts the Rebels’ frozen stronghold. The production chose this remote location for its long, consistent winter conditions and broad expanses of snow, and crews worked in extreme cold and storm conditions to capture authentic footage. Norwegian local resources were also tapped—including mountain-rescue skiers used as extras—and the Finse area has since become a pilgrimage site for fans visiting the legendary filming spots.
