The North Water

Set in Hull, England and the Arctic in the late 1850s, the series follows Patrick Sumner, a former army surgeon who signs on as ship’s doctor for a whaling expedition headed into dangerous polar waters. As the voyage pushes deeper into the ice, survival becomes a test of endurance, morality, and what men are capable of when there’s no way back.

Norway’s Svalbard provides an intensely authentic Arctic environment that’s essential to the story’s realism. The stark ice, extreme light, and remote, unforgiving terrain help create the series’ harsh atmosphere and make the whaling expedition feel physically real—heightening both the danger and the isolation at the heart of the narrative.
