By Producers, for Producers: A Hands-On Approach to Green Filmmaking

The Green Producers Club (GPC) was founded in 2019 by film producers who wanted to help the creative industry meet the climate targets of the Paris Agreement.

At the heart of GPC is the Green Producers Tool (GPT), a research-backed climate tool based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol). Using a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach, and in partnership with CICERO – the Center for International Climate Research, GPT provides up-to-date emissions data to help productions make informed decisions, plan effectively, and track their environmental impact. The tool also helps productions create roadmaps to meet climate targets for 2030 and 2050. More than 500 organizations worldwide currently use GPT.

The Tool helps you measure and the Club helps us collaborate

“We believe that we need to measure to reduce, we need to understand what is causing the emissions in the productions and additionally we need collaboration. The Tool helps you measure and the Club helps us collaborate. Through our regular Club Meetings we gather our members and other sustainability professionals in order to share knowledge and experience. By regularly being exposed to both best, and worst practices, we believe we provide our members with a recipe of greening their organizations.”

Knowledge-Sharing for Sustainable Productions

GPC organizes Club Meetings where members and sustainability experts come together to share experiences and best practices. This community-driven approach ensures that productions stay informed and aligned with the latest industry standards, making it easier to implement sustainable practices.

The Club is growing rapidly across Europe, thanks to its user-friendly platform, research-backed methods, and strong professional network. Over 500 member organizations have already produced more than 5,000 projects using GPT. Recent major film and TV productions using the tool include Heajastallan and Jo Nesbø's Detective Hole, in addition to major tv-shows and series in the Nordics.

Award-Winning Sustainability in Action

The impact of the Green Producers Club is already visible. Club partner Strix Television won the Sustainable Production Award at the Global Production Awards in Cannes for their TV series Farmen, proving that sustainability is not just necessary, it’s being recognized and celebrated in the industry.

Meeting European Sustainability Standards

Sustainability reporting is becoming a core requirement for businesses across Europe. Since GPT is built on LCA principles and aligns with the GHG Protocol, productions using the tool will be well-prepared to meet evolving EU sustainability regulations.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals serve as an overarching framework for the Norwegian government’s policies. Among these goals, climate and environmental sustainability are particularly high priorities. At the Norwegian Film Commission, we are committed to doing our part to help fulfill the government’s objectives, including increasing awareness and competency in sustainable practices within the Norwegian film industry. In 2024, we were proud to become Club Partners with the Green Producers Club and look forward to collaborating in the years to come.
