Troms Troms is in many ways a miniature of the North. 152.000 people inhabit approximately 26.000 sq km organised in 25 municipalities ranging from 60.000 to 550 inhabitants. Approximately 10% of the population are of Sami heredity. The Gulf stream running up the cost gives the county a temperate climate, and the abscence of heavy industry makes the environment uniquily pure.
More than half the number of Troms´ inhabitants live on islands, perhaps not so surprising as 4 of Norway´s largest islands are situated in this county, with the largest, Hinnøya, divided between Troms and Nordland. The islands are connected to the mainland by bridges and tunnels. Also characteristic are the mountains bordering directly on the sea, the Lyngen Alps perhaps the best known by mountaineers.
The county borders on the sea and 4 counties in the Barents region, Nordland, Vesterbotn, Norrbotn, Lapland and Finnmark. Transport by land, sea and air is well developed with Tromsø as the pivotal point of the county´s transport system.
The county is rich in resources and the location offers particular advantages, especially in the fields of fisheries and aquaculture, extraction of mineral resources, energy production and tourism. With the University of Tromsø and the colleges in Tromsø and Harstad the county has a considerable number of jobs within education and research - particularly in the fields of science and medicine, particularly telemedicine.
Hålogaland Theatre, Harstad Music Festival and Tromsø International Film Festival, together with a number of internationally known artists, are examples of a rich cultural life.
